Quick Overview

This is an eminently readable and enjoyable collection of thirty-five short stories, set in twentieth century Gujarat with a broad focus on gender issues and the under privileged. Eight of the tales take us from colonial India to 1960, while the rest of the stories are from the halcyon days of Ahmedabad in the second half of the twentieth century.

The stories, told with both empathy and humour, weave fascinating narratives around a smorgasbord of people and places and incidents that are at times poignant, at times bemusing but always entrancing. And the characters they draw out remind of characters out of Malgudi Days.

Colourful descriptions of Ahmedabad with its many famous landmarks and the beloved Sabarmati River, lend vibrancy to the tales and the social fabric of a city in economic and social transition is revealed through the tales of the individuals caught up in the turmoil. In a sense, it is the author's own smaran yatra---a journey down memory lane.
